Aug 22, 2007 -- Get unlimited calling for $40/year with magicJack

Clark's gotten a couple of tips from his listeners about a new product called magicJack. This product offers unlimited local and domestic long-distance calling via your Internet connection. The cost is $40 for the first year and about $20 for subsequent years. The way it works is very simple. You plug your phone into the magicJack and then plug magicJack into your computer's USB port. It takes about a minute to load up the first time, but once it assigns you a phone number you're on your way. Clark's very happy with the service so far, but about a third of people he calls through magicJack report poor sound quality. If you're cheap and want to be a pioneer, you can buy this now. And if the company goes bust, you've lost $40 bucks -- not the hundreds some people (including Clark himself) lost on SunRocket.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Good Bye Phone Company!!
I am so glad I got the magic jack, it works GREAT. I have Roadrunner and have no problems, caller ID works on my regular phone. Plus, it comes with a built in digital answering service. Great value for the money. I was paying almost $40 a month with the phone company!!! The only issue I had with install was with my anti virus for my network, I had to manually allow Magic jack to access my network. Quick easy fix. I am recommending this to everyone I know.
  • Really happy with magic jack so far
I couldn't believe how easy it was to set up & I like the fact I can pick up voicemail from my e-mail. I have only had it for one day but I am amazed how good it seems to be for so little money. I bought it at Walgreens because I did not think I would like it and I wanted it to be easy to return. I have been wanting to lose my landline for months now, with this I can now get rid of it. I didn't want to give my cell phone number to businesses and stores & such, now I can give them my magic jack number & not answer if they call & save my cell phone for calls I want to get. So far So good.
  • MagicJack
MagicJack works fine calling the USA from Iraq. The sound quility is great at both ends.
  • Magicjack problems
Be care...I have tried to make the MJ device work correctly for 6 weeks now with little success. Problems are ramdom and chat support has not been able to provide any solutions even after 14 hours of online chat and troubleshooting. Someone needs to investigate this company...they are not living up to their commitments of service quality and now are selling via Radio Shack and Wal-Mart. Consumer beware!
  • Wildblue and magicjack
Wildblue and magicjack will not work. People can't hear me but I hear them fine. Something to do with protocol. Works fine at brothers on bellsouth dsl. If I had that I would still be using it.
  • satellite and other questions
Dee, and others with questions about the product: why not go to the website for the product to ask them? magicjack.com
  • Magic Jack - does it work with satellite internet connections
Can't buy unless I know the answer to this question. There is no fast internet connection where I live without Wild Blue internet.
  • Magic Jack Fix
If you are having trouble getting your magic jack up and running... This article provides some troubleshooting that I could not find with magic jack's customer service. http://www.ehow.com/how_4802284_magic-jack-work.html
  • How Magic Jack can charge so little!!!
I have heard Clark wonder how they get by with charging so little...here is how. If you will notice when you set up, your computer must be set to accept majci jack cookie....they monitor web useage and phone useage and sell the information they gather from those cookes to advertisers. If you don't mind that, then Magic Jack is a great deal.
  • Saves you money, but your friends pay more
Magic jack tech support says calls made to your magic jack phone number will be local only if they have the same PREFIX... the 3 numbers AFTER the area code. So you save money, but a friend across the street having a different PREFIX may pay more to call you.
  • Do you keep your same number
I want to know do you keep your same number if you get this magic jack.
  • magicjack
This is an awful organization. I tried to order this thing online and they lost my order. I have a receipt but they suggest that I reorder through the website, paying for it again. All "corporate communication" is through a chat service that chats in broken English or the a Home SHopping Network-like phone service. No humans. This may be cheap but I can't see how anyone, including Clark Howard, could recommend this with this abyssmal service.
  • MAGIC JACK IS NOTHING BY SPYWARE!!! BUYER BEWARE!!!!

THESE SCUM BAGS HAVE NO SHAME!!!!
    *****************************************

Even the "look how many people came for a free trial" counter on the homepage is a fake, a javascript applet that increments itself automatically:

// the interval (ms) between new visitors
    var interval = Math.round(86400000/perday);

As if targeted advertising, systematic privacy invasion and the signing away of your legal rights wasn't evil enough!

Update: they've changed the counter, which now runs server-side.(SCUM BAGS!!!).

  • Magicjack
I purchased a Magicjack from RadioShack as a Xmas gift for myself and I was surprised at the ease of installation and the phone quality (though it can be spotty at times). It really was plug-n-play. So far, I like the Magicjack gadget. Now I plan to buy a HP t5710 thin client (essentially, a low-power bare-bones computer) on ebay for around $65 to run Magicjack so I don't have to leave the computer on all the time. It sure beats paying $23 a month for a basic landline!
  • Magicjack
I bought one from Radioshack for $29.95 that way I could bring it back there rather than deal with magicjack.com! Well it seems to work great so far
! WE will see if it keeps up! I am sorry so many have had issues and I am a laid back person so for me if I get a bad signal I call back later! I like mine so far!
  • MajicJack
I like my majicjack. If you get a majicjack to replace your home phone you won't be happy. the reliability is not as good as a land line. I use it so supplement my cell phone, plus my wife's family live in another country and it saves us money. she can call there for 2 cents a minute. If we did not have Majic Jack I would have to bump up to a higher cell phone rate. Landlines are dead.
  • Magic Jack
I llike my Magic Jack but I have to have all other applications closed on my PC. I think it is because I have Vista. Sometimes I get an echo but over all it pleases by cheap soul.
    Thanks
  • Troubleshooting tips for Magic Jack owners!
If you need help to get your Magic Jack working as well as it can, be sure to check out the below web site for tips!

    http://www.magic-jack.info/

This is a good primer for those who are not exactly sure how Magic Jack works or how all USA + Canada calls are free.

There are also links to find discount coupon (promo) codes to save anywhere from $2.00 (10% off annual renewal fee) up to $6.95 (Magic Jack shipping cost).

If you are just not sure how good your internet connection is (be aware that introductory packages are often slower than average speed) try the cool VoIP Quality Test to see if your connection get scored all green lights (excellent).
If you get yellow lights it might still work ok, but voice quality may not be as good. Good info to know in advance!

If you are going to buy a Magic Jack as a holiday gift for someone (great idea) and want to run their setup in advance, be sure to preview the install process first. Do take your time and choose the area code and local exchange (prefix) carefully if the area code you want is not yet available. Some goof this up!

Note: I want to tell others who are having various Magic Jack problems about this troubleshooting site, but I put similar comment in the wrong area. This is where my comment should've been.

Good Luck and thanks again to Howard for informing me about the Magic Jack. I have saved a LOT of money with mine!
  • Magic Jack
I love my Magic Jack. I need but seldome use a land line. I seldom if ever have quality problems. I went from paying $28 per month to $20 per year.
  • MAGICJACK
We have had our MAGICJACK now for almost 2 months. Wonderful way to save money on our telephone bill.Honey where is the phone bill at so we can send them more money.....
It has been trouble free and runs as advertized. It has paid for itself in 1 months service where the regular telephone company charges well over 50.00 + fees
Whats real nice is we turn off the computer and the phone doesn't ring.
They talk about calling out but you do get incoming calls as well.
Would I would buy it again ? YES!!!
  • magic Jack
Really NOT that bad at all. I was scared about buying becuase of negative reviews. I purchased mine over Ebay just in case it didn't work. It works great. Every once in a while I get bad sound. (Like a bad cell phone cignal) I usually hang up and it goes away. Or if really bad I re-start Windows and it works fine. I used it in Spain and it worked great. Better than looking for calling cards!
  • Magic Jack on iPhone
I use the magic jack and registered it with my email that I use on my iPhone. So when I get a voicemail the file gets emailed to my cellphone. So when I'm at work I get my home messages almost instantly.

Plus the device is really good. The faster connection you have the better.
  • MagicJack is a rip-off
Sound quality was good for the first month of free trial. Afterwards it deteriorated over time to a point that I no longer use it. One night I spent 2 hours chatting with tech guys who kept bumping me around them but no use in the end. Pathetic service. Thank God I didn't opt for more than an year's service.

Do not fall for it. Clark, please take the advertisement out of your website and do not endorse this product.

If anyone has any intentions of buying this product, please do your own research first. Read all the reviews. Check them out on BBB.
  • AWESOME Product
Would recommend for anyone to use.. Works just as well as the phone I had through the cable company.
  • MagicJack
My MagicJack works like a charm. The audio is as good as any landline I've ever used.
  • MAGIC JACK
This is a piece of crap!!! The product is made very cheaply. The USB adapter completely separately from the unit. The customer service is as Clark would put it, "Customer No Service"! I had the apparatus for two months and never did get an Alabama area code, my phone number was a MS number. I inquired weekly and was told my area code should be available within a couple of weeks, it was 5-6 weeks. Then I was informed I would have to wait for my phone number prefix to be available before my number could be changed to my current AL number. The apparatus broke before any of this could happen and they refused to refund me my money or replace the broken unit. I have disputed the charge and await an answer from my credit card company. I had purchased the unit as well as one year of service. PLEASE do not encourage anyone to purchase this product. The sound quality is horrible and the connection breaks repeatedly. Thanks for passing this along!
  • Magic Jack
I'd really like to get one of these...but all attempts to order one from the MJ website are futile....and no one seems to be manning the 24/7 help/support line. My attempts to contact the company go round in circles.... anybody else getting this customer no service?
  • No refund, no way to contact
I applied for and never got my refund. Now I can't find a way to contact anyone.
This gadget is at least part scam.
  • Spent the $40 but never got the Jack
Yeah, i was sucked into purchasing one. however, i made the mistake of paying using paypal. I actually waited a month before trying to get an answer as to why i never received. and as you read below from others, all you can do is go onto their website and sign on to chat with some person on cyberspace.
the first time, the kept me on "hold" for well over 15 mins. i ended up chatting with 2 other reps and they were helpless. all they could write in the chat session is that they would report what had happened and someone would be in touch. you ever think i heard back from anyone?? of course not. i would still like to try the product but i feel like i would have paid twice for the item and then have issues most of you are experiencing. so i'll just wait a while longer before investing in it again. but just as a FYI, PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD and no other means. if you do not pay with a "real" credit card, you have no recourse if you get shafted like i did. later.
  • majicjack
I've had one for a couple of months now...Not the best quality at all times, but well worth what little you pay. Sometimes I get static on the line, but if I redial the #, it usually clears up...I have cell phones for local & long distance & use the magic jack to contact businesses during peak hours so as not to waste cell minutes
  • majic jack
customer service is no service...had to send back....would not buy
  • It works and is easy to install...
Ordered on Tuesday, received on Friday and works great. Made test calls incoming and outgoing to land lines and cell numbers and had no trouble what so ever (I have Comcast internet svc). Took the MagicJack to my neighbor's house (DSL and wireless router)and it again worked flawlessly. I found it truly to be "plug and play." Sure beats paying $75/mo for a landline phone. I would be nice if you could keep your home phone number, but was told that is in the "works."
  • Love This Device! Real Money Savings!
I have 2 of these devices. One on the main floor of my home, and the other in the bonus room for the kids. Both have worked wonderfully since day one. It took a little longer to install than the information led me to believe, but overall, have had no problems. Good sound quality. I am both on computers that are about 3-4 years old, neither are top of the line models. I am not at all disappointed with my decision to give them a try. I feel like the $40.00 I paid for the unit and 1st years service is much less than I would pay the phone company just for unlimited long distance. So, it's worth it if you use it only for long distance and keep a landline for other calls.
  • Magicjack help
I'm a big fan of Howard so I'll pass this on. MagicJacks tech support is terrible. When I had problems I searched for two months until I found the e-mail address for one of the higher level tech guys at MagicJack. I contacted him and he had me up and running in a matter of days. His address is Rikard.Bone@ymaxcorp.com. Hope this helps. "SAVE US MORE MONEY HOWARD"
  • Majic Jack
I don't have a Magic Jack but do have customers with them. I own/operate a computer business. There are a lot of variables such as PC speed, Internet speed, Internet quality, some routers are better than others, and time of day for usage can make a big difference. Internet speeds and quality change more with some providers than with others at peak usage hours which greatly affects the quality of the Magic Jack. Bottom line, it is going to work perfect for some and not work for others. If Magic jack will make the software a lot more efficient on both network and PC resources, they would have the best thing since, well, Magic.
  • Magic Jack- router may be the issue
I have issues sometimes at home using Magic jack connected through a router to my cable modem- Comcast. I bring my computer out to my relatives and use it without any issues ever- the difference is no router and they have DSL. I expect it is the router causing issues. I can correct issues by replugging magic jack back into computer or restarting through menu button.
  • MagicJack
It would be interesting if those who are having sound quality problems post their computer specs. I have an AMD2 6000+ with 2GB RAM. I connected my DSL modem to the Ethernet port rather than USB. Is it possible that poor sound quality and other problems are related to a sub-par computer? Don't know, but it might be interesting to note.
  • MagicJack
I just installed MagicJack and it's working fine so far, albeit I only called two people. I called two cell phone and one person picked up and said my voice was loud and clear. Also, the connection was fast. The second cell phone was also fine but I left a v-mail message. I will continue to test it out and I will post back with my results. So my review is far from complete. For those having trouble getting MagicJack to work, I noticed that mine would not work immediately until disconnected and reconnected the handset several times. So possibly the connection to the MagicJack USB device is not a solid connection.
  • MagicJack
    Clark,
You say you like MagicJack; I wish you would tell the rest of us how you get it to work.
It's the biggest waist of money (albeit only $40.00) I have seen.
If you really want to know just how bad it is Google 'Problems With MagicJack' and see what you get.
I believe the company is defrauding people with false advertising and I am sorry to say it: You are helping them!
  • CANNOT GET MAJIC JACK TO WORK ON ANYTHING BUT A BASE PHONE

  • magic jack
I got it a month ago and I love it.
No problems with the service. Cant beat the price!
  • pos- no support service
pos doesn't work, tried the upgrade, that does help, can' figure how to get that live help, because all I get is more things to try and they don't work. Sure wish that there was a real person to help talk thru the issues. By bob
  • magic jack
have not purchased one yet wondet to see if it's worth the hassle tcamaro1968@aol.com
  • magic jack
Don't bother with this company. There is NO way to contact anybody at Magic Jack. I returned my magic jack because the assigned phone number never worked and there was NO way to contact ANYBODY at Maguc Jack.
  • Magic Jack Works for Me
I bought Magic Jack. Waited until they had my area code. Works great - no problems.
  • Magicjack is AWESOME
I have two of them now for just a few weeks. they have been working nearly perfectly. Occassionally the sound quality suffers, but it's a VERY low percentage of the time. Usually re-calling the person or them calling you again fixes it. I have only two suggestions: do NOT try to use your computer's sound device and a headset/mic for this.... your soundcard is most likely NOT going to be able to modulate well enough; and IF it doesn't work outright, DO the "upgrade", it works. Plug a phone handset into the magicjack, and enjoy!!! I WILL post here again in 6mos, 1 yr, etc, and let you know how it is working. I bought two magicjacks for two years, platinum version(all options) for about $100. It took maybe 24-48 hours for the jack to receive incoming calls and be accepted by 911 service. After that, it's like having any other phone service, minus $300-1000+ a year in bills. As for that one guy's server issues, I'm lucky as I'm in one of the new states offered(Ga) and they are likely to have new hardware(server) to support the back-end of this system.
  • bought one
Finally after many chats with c/s, I downloaded the upgrade and saw the phone icon to get a number, now it won't work. Last time with c/s, she suggested I "give" it to a friend rather than give auth code to return it. it costs $46 with s/h. If it works again, it is a great deal. So I'll keep it and give another try. My husband thinks that it "pulls" too much on our computer. So I sneak and pull it in to try and then hide it again.
  • Magic Jack Servers
I have had MJ for a while now and liked the service, but here recently, say between 4-8 months now it has been down due to a server issue that MJ has. They said they are resolving the issue, but how long does it take. Anyone else have this error?
  • I've had Magic Jack for a couple of months and at first I would have people say they can barely hear me, but it has worked it self out. We love it! No more bills on a monthly basis for a phone we hardly used anyway. It works when I need it.
WE HAVE BEEN SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT IT AND HOW MUCH WE LOVE IT.
I WISH I COULD MAKE A % OFF HOW OFTEN WE TALK ABOUT IT.
  • Magic Jack 800 number issues
800 or 888 numbers that you call and have automated voice prompts, e.g. "press 1 to activate your account" and then "enter your 16 digit account number" do not work. I've tried a wired phone to eliminate my cordless without success. Their support isn't any help. They say that 888 numbers are not supported but won't give me a time frame as to when they will be.
  • The jack that ran out of magic
I had this magic-jack for three months. I endured the static that faded in and out, however, when my jack stopped working and the so-called live customer service insisted that I connect the jack w/o the USB extension (which was impossible w/o disconnecting me keyboard and mouse connections)They refused to give further assistance. Since they felt it was the extension rather than the jack its self, I suggested that they replace the extension...they refused. I asked for a physical address...they refused. I requested a RMA, only to be referred to their site that would not except it because it was over the 30-day window. I contacted Pay-Pal for help but they graciously stated that they could not assist me but suggested that I contact my credit card company. Visa stated that they would do a chargeback to Pay-Pal and then Pay-Pal will extract the moneys from Magic-Jack's account. This I did now I am waiting for Magic-Jack to cry foul. If nothing else they will have to contact me to request the return if their non-working Magic. Yes, it was the Jack itself, I plugged in in my firms computer and guess what...it did not work. So much for the magic
  • I'm a little wary now...
    A scathing review at BoingBoing:

"Our buddies at Boing Boing Gadgets have had a hard look at the MagicJack Internet telephony thingamabob and discovered that it is a festering pustule of crappy terms of service, spyware, and lies:

In short, it not only has one agree to ads with its paid-for system, but claims that the ads are necessary for it to work. It will also snoop on your calls to target ads more accurately, and has you sign away your legal right to take it to court if it defrauds or otherwise harms you. Delightful.
Neither the EULA itself, nor any other privacy or legal information, can be easily found at its homepage. It's not even provided at the point of sale, where one enters credit card info, email and street addresses as such, so as to gain access to the service and have your MagicJack dongle delivered. I found the EULA's URL through Google.

It gets sexier. When you access MajicJack's instant web help page, a bizarre series of "compatibility tests" take place first, reporting lies like "Your MagicJack is functioning properly" even if you don't have one installed.

Even the "look how many people came for a free trial" counter on the homepage is a fake, a javascript applet that increments itself automatically..."

  • Magic Jack and making it work
I am a network engineer and use it. Best solution is use an AC USB Hub, No multi-line phones and move the phone at least 10 ft away from the computer to prevent interference. The broadband connection can go thru a router, switch without a problem. These suggestions eliminated my problems. I do have cordless phones also attached to the magic jack lines. You may not get a local number for the magic jack lines. Do have over at least 1GB of RAM; more is better. More speed on the broadband is better.
  • Works for me...
I've had mine for about two months now and I love it. I was able to change my cell phone plan to a less expensive one and save money, I had several problems with sound quality at first but was able to resolve this with the quickfix or just disconnect it from your pc or disconnect your modem for about 5 mintues and your on your way. With my cordless phone I still get some interference due in part to several wireless signals throughout, I changed it to a str* wired landline and that solved that problem, I assume a 5ghz cordless would work better under those circumstances. I'm telling all my friends about it and how I'm saving at least $80.00 per month, and you can take it with u.
  • Magic Jack Sound Quality
I was having the same issues as well as others such as calling my cell phone from my Magic Jack phone resulted in being no audio on the cellphone but the magic jack line was working. I was also getting low volume on all calls. This was resolved by my disconnecting my modem and router, I use vonage and have cable internet, for 10 minutes and my Magic Jack has performed well ever since.
  • MAGIC JACK
I was ripped by VONAGE; supposedly a two month free trial. Cost me around $100.00 in the end. MAGIC JACK was my next choice. IT WORKS. $19.95 PER YEAR!
Requires high speed internet but dont we all have that anyhow?
I hope this brings the huge monopolies to their actual knees!
My phone bills have errors almost every month, in favor of the big bells, and I challenge them and usually get my credit. I LOVE MAGIC JACK!!!
HELP KEEP MAGIC HEALTHY AND PROFITABLE BY BUING ONE NOW!!
