Aug 08, 2007 -- Are rebates a rip-off?

Clark doesn't do rebates. He believes that you shouldn't buy something just because it offers a rebate. After all, you may never see that money! The Wall Street Journal recently sent five people out to buy five different items at five different retailers. All the products purchased came with rebates. All five people correctly filled out the necessary paperwork to get the rebates. Yet only one person actually got money back. That's a mere 20 percent! And that was with all the rebates being processed properly by the consumer. Now, think about how often you lose the rebate paperwork or fill it out incorrectly. Rebates are like a legal con game, according to Clark. His executive producer, Christa, recently tried to get a rebate from her phone company when she got high-speed internet bundled with other services. She still hasn't received any money back. Even worse, she was eligible for three separate rebates when she bundled three services together. But she hasn't yet seen a single penny in rebate funds from her phone company. Meanwhile, Clark likes that OfficeMax has eliminated rebates and instead lowered prices. Staples, meanwhile, offers very easy online rebates similar to wholesalers like Costco and BJ's. That's a good start, but why don't they just go the OfficeMax route? Perhaps because they know that most people don't even bother applying for rebates. The moral of the story here is that you shouldn't buy something just because it offers a great rebate deal unless you are sure you are going to use the product.

  • HP - Staples "Easy" Rebate
I purchased 3 HP laptops and printers from Staples April 6. Each computer had a $50 rebate and each printer had a $70 rebate which made the printers free. I filled out the rebate forms on all 6 of the rebates and sent them in. All 3 of the $50 rebates were filled and I received one $150 check by the end of May. Everytime I called about the 3 $70 rebates HP and Staples were both clueless. I went back and filed my rebate requests on line through Staples' Easy Rebate website. I finally received email confirmation that my requests had been received. It is now June 29 and HP is saying that they mailed me the check via US Mail on June 12. They are requesting that I allow 30 days for the check to arrive! I know the US Postal Service can be slow, but not 30 days slow! My ordeal over my $210 rebate from HP has made me decide I will NEVER PURCHASE AN HP PRODUCT AGAIN! HP = VERY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!
  • rebates for purolator filters through advance auto parts
tied to get my $6 rebate for 6 months now. after 6 emails still no reply from Advance Auto Parts or Purolator. Purolator just gives me the same info where to contact Advance Auto, these guys should go to jail for misl;eading the consumer. never again.

  • And mail those rebates correctly!
I recently bought a set of Rain-X wiper blades & got to try my hand at a scratch-off card at the dealership. I was pleasantly surprised to see I had just won a $10 rebate on the Rain-X Latitude blades I just had installed. I have sent in many item rebates in the past, and of course know that you need to follow every detail to a "T" or it will be rejected (their way of limiting the rebates paid out I guess). I filled out everything perfectly, attached the original receipt (not a copy of course?), and then noticed while addressing it that it needed to be sent "certified mail, return receipt requested". Well by this time I had already wasted so much time that I might as well just finish it. Well, today I went to send it in... The cost because of the manner in which it had to be mailed cost me $5.32 instead of what would have been 1 regular stamp. Now I can wait 6 to 8 weeks to get my check (if it ever shows up), just so I can clear $4.68 on the deal. Wow I'm glad I hadn't bought the regular blades, they were only a $5 rebate and the whole deal would have cost me 32 cents. Why would they possibly make people send this "certified mail, return receipt requested"??? If I had not already wasted much time filling it out, copying the receipt, an envelope, & standing in line at the post office, I WOULD HAVE THROWN IT IN THE GARBAGE!!!! My wife’s car also needs a new set of wiper blades now, how about a set of Rain-X Latitudes ??? No, I don't think so now!!! This one cost them future sales.
  • Staples rebate
I purchased a computer for a Christmas gift. I cannot get rebate, I must open and get serial numbers off two products.. I returned the $789.58 purchase the next day.
  • rebate card?
I have found that I am one of the few that normally get their rebates back, but the last rebate I received from Staples came in the form of a rebate card. The stupid thing about this is you can't overspend, so you always have to check your balance and if you only have $2.98 you better spend no more. Say for example your total order comes to $15.00 and you would like to put the $12.02 on your debit card you can't. I got a couple of bank cards as gift cards like that as well and all of them have around $2.00 left on them, that's how they make their money!
  • Spring FLing Amex gift card rebate not recd
I properly filled out (and kept copies) for a $25.00 rebate. It is long overdue. I have several emails back and forth to try to get the rebate. Still no luck. I especially didn't like when I re-sent all the copied info as an email attachment and the reply was ...
"I have this information escalated. Hopefully, we can get you a rebate card." Hopefully! Hopefully! They owe me a rebate card or $25!
  • rebates
I can't understand the comment by the person who says they always get their rebates. I've never heard of anyone who did! 20% is just about the success rate my family has - and friends have.
  • rebates
I don't understand why not honoring rebates is legal. It truly feels like shopping in the wild west. I avoid stores that offer them. Last year I bought my dd a camera at Staples for Christmas, and it came with 6 rebates. Guess what I got back? one 20.00 check and a coupon for a free poster. This was with their wiz bang automatic rebate service. Oh, sure. It turned out my dh was buying me a camera at the same time, at Target. No rebate, but they still found a way to shortchange us. The camera broke within a couple of months. He'd asked at three different Targets what their policy is if it broke, They all assured him they would simply replace the camera. Well, they didn't. They made us send it in to the manufacturer and we were sent a rebuilt one. Target lost our electronics business. Better a rebate you know you'll never get then getting lies and garbage when an item breaks immediately.
  • No rebate received
www.fastfloors.com offered $200 rebate (hardwood floor purchase) to be received in 8-10 weeks.
Did not show form to filled out to get this rebate, but they claim I should have clicked on a picture to find it.
Now they're saying I didn't fill out the form - but could find no on-line form on their website.
    Therefore, we lose our rebate.
Any chance of getting the $200 out of them?
  • rebates
I have never been ripped off on rebates. Staples, Best Buy, Menard's and others have always sent them, and in the prescribed time. I don't understand your comments from 05/12/08 about only getting 20 percent response. There must be more to the story.
