The phone companies hate this, because directory assistance. is such a revenue generator for them. Google has also started a free directory assistance, but for businesses only: 1-800-GOOG-411. As of now its still in beta testing, so you don't even have to listen to an ad. So why pay for something you can get for free so easily?
