Jan 30, 2007 -- Toyota pays owners for "engine sludge" probs

Clark has received calls for years from Toyota owners complaining about “engine sludge.” No matter how many complaints come in on the show or in general, the company has always blamed drivers for the problem and it’s frustrated Clark to no end. Well, finally Toyota is changing its tune. From now on, certain models will be covered for “engine sludge” for 8 years. The company has not accepted responsibility, but a statement reflects that defects in two of Toyota’s engines caused the sludge. The included models and years are: Camry (1997-2002), Solara (1999-2002), Sienna (1998-2002), Avalon (1997-2002), Celica, (1997-1999), Highlander (2001-2002), Lexus ES-300 (1997-2002) and RX-300 (1999-2002). Even if you’ve gotten the problem fixed and paid for the problem yourself, you could get your money back. The courts and the law prevailed in this case, which doesn’t always happen. Toyota’s luck eventually ran out and you are the beneficiary.

What others are saying

  • engine sludge
I purchased a Toyota Avalon in Dec of 2007. I has developed engine sludge and Toyota says they will not honor the warranty because I can't produce ALL the records. Further, they say it is NOT, a manufacturer defect.
Balony.........They knew this engine could have this problem.
What can I do? My money tree has died and I don't have the money for repairs.

I was told today that the 8 years is from the date of the original sale and so if you have a 2001 it may not be covered if it was sold before this date in 2001. Mine is having this problem and they said I missed it by 31 days.
  • Toyota is a GREAT company!
There cars are consitently the most reliable. Their designs are great. You get more for your money with Toyota, and if YOU take care of your car you won't have problems.

Your knock is becuase you're using cheap gas.

Did you ever read your owners manual?
  • Toyota stinks!
Toyota is a horrible company. I suspect that they pay people to give good reviews of their cars and service because I have NEVER had a good experience with them. They care absolutely NOTHING about their customers. I have a 2004 Sienna that I bought new that has always had an engine knock from day one. I have complained about it on numerous occasions but all I can get from them is that I should use 93 octane gasoline. They say it needs that to not knock. Of course they say nothing of this when they are trying to sell you the car. I recently started taking the car to Lexus for service because I was so fed up with the customer "no service" I have always gotten from Toyota and when I mentioned the knock to them, they pulled up a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that has been on my car for the engine knock that requires that some very expensive parts be replaced. It expires at 80K miles, my car has 83K miles. They printed it out and had me take it to Toyota for the fix. Well instead of apologizing for not fixing it years ago as they should have and causing me to have to pay for years of premium gas, they tried to bargain with me and said they would pay for the parts but I had to pay for the labor!!!!! What, I did nothing wrong except be unaware of information they were trying to hid from me. If only I had taken it to Lexus 6 months ago!! When I said that was unacceptable, they said they would do nothing. I don't know if I should consult an attorney or call Clark! But I am telling everyone I know, NEVER make the mistake of buying a Toyota!
