Sep 22, 2006 -- Groups want SS & Medicare to stay

Americans have had a tough time lately with spending and budget deficits. We should be careful not to spend more money than we have as a country, but we are. And Clark was even more stunned to see the results of a study done by two polar opposite groups – The Heritage Foundation and The Brookings Institution – in conjunction with the Concord Coalition. It showed that, regardless of people’s political leanings, both groups wanted to keep social security and Medicare. That includes even the most conservative folks involved. They could not come up with a single government program to cut. But the reality is that we don’t have to pay for all of these programs – unless we raise taxes. And again, in a strange turn of events, all of the participants thought we should raise taxes to pay for everything. Clark doesn’t get it. What are we thinking? We have to stop spending money and become self-reliant or we’ll become a third world country.
