Wine choices go up & prices go down

The Supreme Court helped the American consumer tremendously last year when it ruled that people could buy wine in other states. Since the ruling, consumption of wine is up while prices are way down. In addition, the choice of wine has skyrocketed. The No. 1 seller of wine in the United States is Costco Wholesale. Target, Wal-Mart and 7-Eleven are also selling wine. And, the wine quality is great. Previously, people could only buy certain wines and they couldn’t order online from other states. But bit by bit, those anti-competitive practices are going away. And the competition means lower prices and better choices for you.

Get free music downloads legally

Did you know that 97 percent of music downloaded on the Internet is stolen? Clark can’t believe that people think it is okay to do this. The music is not ours to steal. Well, one company realizes that the behavior is probably not going to change, so it is going to offer free music. All you have to do is listen to some ads. The company is called “Spiral Frog,” and the launch date is set for Thanksgiving. Spiral Frog will provide audio and video downloads and users won’t have to worry about spyware because the service is secure. Parents can now direct their kids to this free music site and know that their child is doing the right thing. We don’t want children to think it is okay to steal.

UPDATE: As of March 2009, SpiralFrog.com is no longer available.

Beware of law enforcement scams

You’ve probably gotten a call or letter in the mail, asking for your financial help with a certain police or law enforcement organization. People want to help police, but it’s hard to tell if these outfits are legitimate. One group – known as the “Police Protective Fund”- was busted yesterday for illegally soliciting money from law-abiding citizens around the country. The PPF operated out of California and rented mail boxes where the money would arrive. It’s also important to remember that many of the organizations are raising money for union activities. Some people are not aware of that and think the money goes directly to police departments. So, if you get a phone call, don’t give right away. Instead, ask that the caller send you some literature about the organization. If it’s legit, they will happily send you the information. If it’s a sham, you’ll immediately hear a dial tone.

For auto insurance, go with top two

Insurance is one thing Clark doesn’t skimp on, and he doesn’t want you to either. You want your life insured with a financially solid company that will be around down the road when your family may need it. With life insurance, quality means financially strong. When it comes to car and home insurance, quality means that the company is there for you and does a good job. J.D. Power & Associates and Consumer Reports recently rated auto insurers, and both found two companies that are far better than any other company. There are good companies out there, but these two blow everyone away every year. They are USAA and Amica Mutual. USAA is only available to military personnel, their dependents and recent retirees. But Amica is open to everyone. You must qualify as a solid customer and you must have a good driving record. It’s tough to get in. But once you’re in, you will be very happy. So, which company is the worst? According to J.D. Power, AIG was the worst insurer. It’s one of the world’s largest insurers, but apparently its customers are not very satisfied. Just above was GMAC, Mercury and Allied. Clark was surprised by one of the lower ranked companies – Progressive. The company is known as being very smart and changing the insurance industry for the better. But again, its customers aren’t getting the service they want, according to the survey.
