Jul 06, 2006 -- HP suing over toner cartridge scuffle

Hewlett Packard’s printer division has kept the company alive over the years, but the company has been losing money on the sale of toner because it’s so expensive. People are buying from third-party companies to refill their cartridge instead of buying from HP directly. There are independent stores that just sell refills for cartridges. People have also been going to Office Max and Walgreens, which have kiosks that refill ink in cartridges. Well, instead of lowering prices to compete with these companies, HP is fighting them in court. HP has tried to design its toner cartridges so they can’t be “recharged” by anyone else, so the company is suing Office Max and Walgreens for patent infringement. Clark wants consumers to know that it’s often a lot cheaper to replace your printer instead of buying new cartridges, especially if you have a laser printer. Clark went through this dilemma recently and ended up buying a brand new printer. It would have cost him about $300 to replace the toner cartridge in his laser printer. Buying a new printer was just $199.
