Jun 16, 2006 -- Toyota targeting 8-year-olds?

Toyota has launched a big marketing initiative to get more people to buy a Scion. How is the company doing it? Toyota is targeting the all-important 8-year-olds out there. The idea is that these young people will convince their parents to buy a Scion, specifically the XB. The company has been trying to get younger people to buy Toyotas for years. The average age of a Toyota buyer is about 50 years old. And apparently, this is working. The company has created a virtual community and Web site for elementary school children, and there have been thousands of posts. The community meeting place is called Club Scion. Clark thinks it’s fine to market your products. But kids don’t know the difference between an advertisement and the truth. It’s not an innocent move on Toyota’s part. Clark read recently, for example, that he goal of the cell phone industry is to sell cell phones to 6-year-olds. The market for adults and teens is saturated, so companies are targeting pre-teens. This is getting out of hand.
