Jun 09, 2006 -- Beware of Yellow Pages scam

If you own your own company, you may have seen some e-mails that look like invoices from the Yellow Pages or other advertising mediums. Really, these are solicitations, but people think they’re real and they pay them. One California firm ripped people off in 26 states by sending them checks. The gotcha was that once the checks were cashed, the person automatically signed up to advertise with a group called “Yellow Pages, Inc.” The good news is that the company was discovered and ordered to pay restitution. If you got ripped off by this outfit, you must respond within 60 days to get your money back. So, find your paperwork and do what you can to get your money back. Also, be aware that Chase Bank is doing something similar. So, if you’re a customer beware.

What others are saying

  • Yellow Pages listing via internet
I recieved a call believing it to be my AT&T listing. I was told it would be for 2 years at $19.16 a month and agreed to use the listing since we use AT&T. The company is called American Yellow Pages, not AT&T.
Now I am disputing the charge which I paid by credit card, and hoping the credit card company will help me out.
Anybody else have a problem with this company? They also go by GOAM Media.
  • Unauthorized Yellow Pages Ads
There is a company that calls themselves OYP, who called my business, spoke to the receptionist, and tricked her into authorizing an online advertisement for my business. Not only did my receptionist not ask what the distribution area was, but she had no authorization in the first place to make this so-called authorization. We then got a bill for $400, which I refused to pay. I live in a small town, and I have used the same advertising for the past 11 years which has served me well in this relatively small community. Now we are getting harrassing phone calls from this company. I listened to one of the messages...it sounded like a 14 year old girl who claimed she was from the legal department, and that If I didn't pay, would be forced to take legal action and that "my credit would be screwed". Didn't sound very professional to me. Anyway, this has been going on for about 6 months now. What can I do to stop the harassing phone calls, which are tying up the phone line?
