Jun 08, 2006 -- Vonage gets customer service complaints

Clark gets a lot of feedback on Internet phone calling services, both good and bad. It’s still not mainstream in the U.S., but it’s growing every day. Recently, the feedback has been negative, especially regarding Vonage. The complaints about Vonage involve the company’s poor customer service and technical support, and it’s causing people to drop the service. Clark has used Vonage for years and he hasn’t had much trouble. But the churn rate is more than 2 percent right now, which is high. In addition, the Wall Street Journal contacted Vonage to ask about the complaints and no one respond. That’s just not smart. This is a critical time for Vonage, especially with the recent flubbed public offering. Reputation matters and Vonage needs to step up and fix its problems. The other issue is that there is no regulating body in the Internet phone service, so Vonage hasn’t had any incentive to work on its customer service problems. It will just mean other companies will join the market and people will go with the best one.

Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.

  • Vonage Cancellation Ripoff
As many have indicated earlier, Vonage is asking me to pay $120 as termination fee (rebate recovery fee of $80 and $40 for cancellation before 24 months)after having had the service for 17 months. I have switched to Ooma the cost of which I will recover in 6 months and thereafter the service will be free for life or for as long as the company is in business.

When I called Vonage to cancel the service, they tried to lure me with all kinds of offer including two free months and thereafter a reduced price of $15 a month and lot of other things. They kept bumping up the offer and when they found that nothing would work with me, they adopted a completely different tone. They told me a total $120 for cancellation. Vonage never disclosed any of these charges while signing me up over the phone. They told me that the only thing I risk is $26 for the initial setup if I decide to cancel after a month. If I canceled before 30 days, they would give me full refund. They never disclosed any of the hidden charges. No consumer expects such hidden charges for telephone service. It is a paid service with full rate (not a discounted rate for few months) and the consumer should have the right to cancel the service anytime and return the equipment with no charges. That's what you do with cable and DSL service but it seems that the VOIP industry is not yet regulated. Even though the early termination fee of $40 was not disclosed to me, I was willing to pay that and return the vonage equipment at my cost so as to avoid the $80 rebate recover fee but Vonage would not take the equipment back. Their intent is to charge me $80. In order to buy time and do some research, I have put my decision on hold but one thing is for sure - I will not let these crooks get my money. Stay away from Vonage. There are many other services out there. I am learning the hard way to now ask for a complete terms and conditions before I sign up for anything.

Thanks Angela for providing contact details for Vonage. I will certainly try one more time with the corporate folks.
  • Extremely Positive Experience with Vonage
I am completely amazed at all the negative comments here re Vonage. I have beem a Vonage customer since 2005 and have never come close to having any of the issues people have reported here. I switched my service from BellSouth (AT&T) and the quality has always been outstanding even to the European destinations, where friends and colleagues assume I'm in London because of the crystal clear quality. My experience with customer service and tech support have been outstanding - only needed to call them twice: First time due to having problems faxing to which they promptly and efficiently fixed and secondly inquiring about the new v-portal adapter to which they offered a free replacement with no strings attached (no contract extension required) - they gave it to me free as a courtesy for being a long time customer. I do pay my service in advance yearly which reduces my costs down to $25.56 monthly including all taxes and local/state fees. And now for no additional cost they are now providing World service where you can make calls to 60 countries for free. I do not see anyone else coming close to the value provided by Vonage which has exceptionally high quality and reliability. I did try MagicJack but the quality and reliability I'm used was just not there and I gave it away to a relative as I could not stand the call quality. If you are considering Vonage, I say they're worth a chance if you need comparable quality/reliability to old fashioned telephone service. If you are looking for the cheapest, then magicjack might be good for you.
  • Vonage is a rip off Company
I was trying to downsize on expenses and I droped my satelite tv and decided to get Sky Angel I saw that Vonage had a very attractive program that would let me do that as well as keep my other services for much less than I was paying my now company and because Vonage had been arround for some time I assumed they were reputable. Well the next day after, I re-thought my decision after talking with two very reliable people who told me the company was not good. I wanted out before I had to deal with them so I called to cancel.I had no concern because the add on the net said I had 30 days to change my mind. I called them and told them my decision. The woman said I could not do that ...I said yes I can and I called my credit card company, Capitol one... they argued for me and the woman said I would have to call back on the following monday ...I thought about it and I desided to just let them have the original fee to get the service to errace any inconvenience I might have caused them because I am a nice person and when the equipment came by UPS I refused it never opening it sending it back. Well the credit card bill came but because of a lot of things going on in my life ( I have been battling cancer since 2005) and because my husband uses that card for his fuel ...he is a truck driver. I did not realize that they were charging me every month for a service I had canceled the day after I got it and sent the equipment back refusing it.I called Capital one and they said they could only protest for 120 days so those theifs charged me for the the original fee and the months before the 120 days ...I can't understand how they can do that when I canceled the service ... sent back the equipment and never used the service.Just don't get involved with the company if you want to keep your money cause they are not interested in giving you a service they just want to scam you out of your money.
  • Vonage rip off
I used Vonage for 1 year 11 months and 2 weeks. My contract said I had to pay a fee if I dropped vonage in the first year. When I dropped them, they still billed my credit card the fee and on contacting their (3rd world) representatives (they insisted they have none at all in the US), the said that I had agreed to 2 years. I argued that my contract was only for a year and further, if it was for 2 years, they should charge me for 2 more weeks service (about $7) that would fulfill my contract, instead of $50 cancellation. They would not listen! Then I called chase and reversed charges with credit card, and a month later they rebilled them! They provided chase the document that showed that I had agreed to a year of service. And they documentation that I had been with them for 23 and a half months! I am still disputing this with Chase. They are a terrible company. Stay away! I am trying to pursue a class action case against them for those who had a one year contract and still being charged a termination fee. Can you spell RIP OFF????
  • Vonage - Recovery fee scam
If you decide to cancel your service with vonage...beware of their scam "recovery fee" hidden in the terms and conditions. This fee is arbitrarily applied for the modem. In my case they charged me $90 dollars. When I offered to return the item they said that they were unable to receive it and I was going to be billed. What makes this a scam is that I have returned equipment to them in the past with no problem. When you initially sign up you have the choice of new or used. I have disputed this charge with my Credit Card company and prepared to fight them tooth and nail on this. We need to expose practices like this. Tell your friends, post on bulletin boards to spare others from this company.
  • Avoid VONAGE
They continue to bill your credit card after you call to cancel. They play stupid and try to wear you down with pathetic customer service, hoping you will give up. Talked with several levels of customer service reps in some third-world country for over one hour and they still refused to refund credit card. All I can do now is warn others -- STAY AWAY FROM VONAGE !!!
  • VONAGE is awful
I had vonage for 8 months, I had to reset my modem (ATT) and Vonage unit every time I got ready to use it or anytime someone called me. The phone quality was awful and echoed. Now they charged my credit card $93 for the "free" unit they sent me and the early termination fee which I was not aware of by any means. Am fighting with dispute with my bank, but STAY AWAY... they were not HONEST with me and now I have to pay the price!!!
  • Stay away from Vonage
When transferring to Vonage, everyone was curtious and helpful. I had them for a few months and only had a horrible connection (IF it stayed connected). Tried to get it corrected, but it never came to be. I had to call on my cell phone, because using vonage, I kept getting dropped or they couldn't understand me, because of the breakup. I was not aware I couldn't use my fax anymore unless I bought an additional line for $10 a month more. If you have a security system to boot, well it will become a big hassle.
So today after having it cancelled, it's been interesting to say the least. I'm still on the phone waiting to talk to someone. (1/2 hour so far and counting) I talked to someone right away, but once they found out I was cancelling, the wait is on. I fortunately changed my Credit Card before I cancelled and they haven't been able to charge it the cancellation fees and modem fees. I'm trying to find out where to send a check, but they don't list anywhere to send it too, even though they say you can in their billing info.
Buyer beware with Vonage!! I thought Clark had supported Vonage, but I wish I would have checked his site again before hand.
  • Vonage rip off
Vonage sold me a service when I don't have high speed internet and I told them. I called then back the same day I they charged me without my permission
a cancelation fee of $39.99. I told the supervisor that they didn't have my permission to charge my account and did it any how.
  • Vonage is worse and worse
Reading all the posts below I wonder how this company is still in business! I have pretty much the same experience, some bogus charges on my card and horrrrrrible customer service. After a whole day on the phone, the issue is still not resolved.
    To sum it up:
    - Low IQ RUDE customer service
    - Undisclosed cancellation fees
    - Deceptive Unethical Business Practice

As everyone else recommends on here, stay AWAY! Once they got your credit card, you are on you are done!
  • Vonage
I was considering switching to Vonage but after all the horrible comments that were left, I will continue the search for a cheaper phone service. Thanks Clark!!
  • Vonage Complaint
We switched to Vonage from Bell South 3 years ago. After having the same number for 20+ years Bell South told us that because we had just moved 4 miles we could not keep the number as it would not work at our new home because of "switching stations". So we started with a new number from Vonage. We have had Vonage just over 3 years and have had times of decent service and times of very marginal quality as well as outages. Now we are attempting to change to T-Mobile for their $10 a month home service and now we are having the same problems with Vonage that we had with Bell South. First T-Mobile stated Vonage had a "block" on our number. After several phone calls Vonage claimed this was not so. Now we are at a stalemate while being told we wound up with one of the companies "proprierty" numbers and so we can not move it to another company. I have written e-mails to the FCC as well as the Georgia Utilities Commission with no response after about a week. Is there anything else I acn do to try to keep from having to start over again with another new phone number?
  • DON'T GET VONAGE !
VONAGE IS THE WORST TELEPHONE COMPANY. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS SUCKS. TELEPHONE LINE IS TERRIBLE, DROPS A LOT. IF YOU NOT HAPPY AND WANT TO CANCEL THE SERVICE THEY CHARCE YOU A CANCELATION FEE $95.00 .NOT FAIR.
I HATE THE COMPANY AND THE SERVICE.
  • Not happy with Vonage
I've been using Vonage service since 2006 and have good and bad experiences. I've had to return the modem for another one because it kept disconnecting the phone service. The new one starting disconnecting the service also, but then it stopped after resetting it a few times.

Now I'm trying to port my number over to T-mobile (I've had it for 12 years) to use their new landline service for $10 per month by being a cell phone customer. I've been trying to port out the number from Vonage since the summer and every time T-moblie puts in the request to port out the number Vonage responds that my number is not active. But I still have phone service with Vonage, my account is active and they bill me every month. T-mobile has requested many times. I've contacted Vonage. They put a ticket request in and sent me an e-mail to contact T-mobile to put in another request and the same thing. The number is not active. I've ported my number out before even with no name companies and have had no problem (some with slower repsonses than others), but I was still able to get my number moved over to the new provider.

Has anyone had this problem? I'm trying to save money here and don't know what to do. I am going to try the great contact information provided by Angela.

I agree with her, if you haven't started the service, DON'T.
  • Vonage Poor Customer Service
I am on the phone with them right now. My service is not working and I have been trying to get them to fix it for month. I asked to be transfered to a supervisor and was put on hold for a hour. The supervisor never came on. Poor Poor customer service buyer beware
  • Vonage
Yes, I'm also got scammed by vonage, as soon as I give them my card info they start charging me, I call customer service cause I don't what they doing, and the customer service horrible, even make fun of my accent,
I try to get transfer to supervisor, but no lack, anyway I hang-up and called again, but the 1st customer service cancelled my account and debited my account $89.98. I try to stop it but the bank can't, I called back again but their responds is "your account is already cancelled, I can't help you anymore"
  • Magic Jack
My magic jack is not worth a damn, I cannot hear the other party. Most of the time I am unable to make a call, it tells me I need an access code????
  • Helpful Contact Info
I have had a horrible experience with Vonage. Without bad mouthing them (everything is listed here anyway) I will just say be careful. They do not honor the free trial period that they offer. In fact they promise to waive all fees except the shipping and handling. However, once you give them your card infor for the shipping they are off and running and begin charging your account almost immediately - even while still in the "free trial" phase.

I have listed some contact information that has been helpful to me during my resolution with the Company. Hopefully it will be useful to someone else. The info with the asterisks proved to be the most helpful to me, but I thought I‘d list everything here…. just in case.

  • Should you switch to Vonage as of 11/4/08
A resounding NO. The problems listed here have not been resolved. I would go into detail, but fortunately everything is listed already.
    -poor customer service (rude, actually)
    -unethical, deceptive practice
    -undisclosed cancellation fees
    -poor call quality
  • Every bit deceptive advertising
I am on the phone with Vonage right now, as they are still billing us, although we called and told them we can't use their service because we did not want to change our Internet provider. We returned the box to Vonage in May, yet they started charging us anyway, and even now, after my husband was told we would be reimbursed for two out of three months of charges, there is no credit to my debit card yet! I will contact BBB after this, but I wish the FCC would get involved and slap a big fine on this company and end their deceptive practice. It seems to me that they make a lot of money from cancellations that ought to be disputed...but most of the time don't, because folks just get sick and tired of getting the runaround. I will e-mail all my friends and family and spread the word about how they operate.
  • Vonage
Vonage costomer service is the worst I have ever experienced. when I first signed up it took them several HOURS to get me to the right person to help with the tech problem. When I moved the device to another state I had the same issues, dropped calls, heavy static. My girlfriend and I again spent several hours trying to get the thing working. Vonage kept dropping the call to the sevice department and would never return the call when dropped. This meant we had to start over several times. They then charged $90.14 for a new router that was never shipped. When I finally cancelled the sevice they billed my account for another $210.32 with no description of charges. I can only assume it is a cancellation fee. These people have no costomer service and no morals.
  • Vonage
Vonage is HORRIBLE!!! Anyone who is considering leaving their regular landline for Vonage do NOT do it!!! I unfortuneately made this mistake. Aside from poor reception and constantly having to reset the device, their customer service is horrible. Also, it doesnt exactly make me sleep more soundly knowing I wont have a phone line any time the internet is down, as could happen in any number of emergency situations. Well, when I tried to cancel my service after a few months, they decided to charge $130 of undisclosed fees that I was NOT informed about when I signed up for the service. They will give you all kinds of stupid excuses as to why you shouldn't cancel, and then when you do they tack on ridiculous fees that they certainly didnt inform you about when you signed up. Basically, this is a 2 year contract you are getting yourself into...for horrible service with a $130 cancellation fee. That is what they SHOULD tell you when you sign up. However, of course, they dont as they are crooked and dishonest. I really hope Clark Howard reports on how AWFUL this company is.
  • Vonage
I was taken in by marketing offered by Vonage, a digital replacement to my typical land phone service; so I established an account over the phone with them. The Vonage representative assured me that I would be able to continue to use the phone number I have had for the last 20 years, and that if I decided to cancel – for any reason – I could do so within one month without penalty.

I extended my credit card for the initial charges to receive necessary hardware to activate the service – about $50. After the equipment arrived I phoned Vonage to verify that my phone number would be transferred to their service. After sitting through a matrix of various representatives - a process that had me waiting on the phone for about 40 minutes – I was finally told that my number would not be available for transfer.

I decided to cancel the service and get out while I was ahead; unfortunately Vonage operates their cancellation division on eastern standard time (their new accounts arm works 24/7). Being on the west coast, and working until long after the Vonage cancellation office is closed presented a problem. I attempted to cancel by internet but there is no facility to do so on their website (lots of places to sign up though). I actually lost track of how long it had been since I set up the account by the time I finally had a day I could actually speak to someone. As it turns out, I was attempting to cancel on the 3rd of June and I set up the account on the 3rd of May. As I see it, I was within my one month grace period, as they saw it; I was one day over. The one day cost me an additional $130.00 in fees and charges. Understand that I never even plugged in a phone, just wanted to return their items and be done with it.

You could argue that I had plenty of time to cancel – but Vonage narrowed the available opportunities for west coast residents, and they do not take cancellations on the weekends, so instead of thirty days to cancel; you really only have 20.

I set up the account in good faith, and would have kept it if Vonage would have delivered on their promises – what I discovered through all this was that Vonage is using a veneer of deceptive advertising to lure in customers, and failing to disclose hidden charges during initial conversations. Further, I found that their customer service staff was all smiles until I attempted to cancel the account – then I was treated like a rented mule. On individual laughed openly when I asked to speak with a supervisor.
  • vonage
would not cancel service then said it would be $129 cancelation fee. phone cuts out the calls really bad. vonage said I had to call back on another line they could not hear me. They never mention the $129 cancelation fee when I signed up. I still have service until
I can find out what the facts really are. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!! I told vonage
I was going to tell you how they are
cheating the customer!!!!!!! Please help. I can't stand this service!!!!
  • Vonage's status today?
I echo Cindy's 4/23/08 comment...I too am with AT&T and am considering a transfer to Vonage. Is this wise?
    Thanks.
  • Vonage's status today?
Would you recommend going with Vonage? I'd be leaving AT&T. How is Vonage doing for customer satisfaction currently? April 2008 ... Thanks.
