Mar 16, 2006 -- Is pet insurance worth it?

Clark and his wife have two designer Chinese pugs that eat up more than just their share of dog food. In addition to costing a hefty price, they also have quite a few health problems. Needless to say, Clark would not go that route if they ever get another dog. Buying pound dogs usually works out fine, and the animals there really need your help. So, if you have a dog with health problems, should you get pet insurance? A recent story Clark read claimed pet insurance was not worth it because companies rarely pay out claims. The payout is below 50 percent, in fact. Consumer Reports also covered this topic recently and reported that pet insurance could actually add to what you pay for pet care instead of helping to defray costs. So, looks like the jury is in that pet care is not recommended.

What others are saying

  • Pet Insurance
I have two dachshunds and the breed has a propensity for ruptured disks in the back because of their proportions. My 6 year old male doxie has had two surgeries already, knock on wood that his 1 year old daughter doxie doesn't have to endure the same. Keester's surgeries have topped $3500 each and his policy has paid me back 75% each time. So for me and for the peace of mind the policies provide me, pet insurance is totally worth it.
  • Healthcare for Pets
My dog has a unique ear problem and has a resistance to antibiotics. I took her the local univesity vet clinic where they found something that would work for her. It was over $300. When I found out the cost, I told them I didn't think I could afford it and they had an endowment fund to cover costs for owners who can't afford their treatment. They asked that I pay what I could. It was a cool deal. So check out the universities when looking for vet care.
  • Health care for dogs
We pay an average of 2-$3,000.00. PER dog EACH year for our dogs in health care alone and only have 2 at the moment. I raise & train SEIZURE ALERT dogs & other service dogs for people. NO ONE PAYS these vet bills for us! I got the "Scanner's Law Bill passed in Fl. in 2002 to protect and give all of these disabled people protection and then people went and murdered my 2 dogs that got the bill passed. I had a heck of a medical mess then to recover from and am still not over it. I'm disabled too. On SSI. No one helps me because I am the training facility for 36 years.I'm looking into some insurance before I drown.
