Aug 24, 2005 -- How to buy disability insurance

Have you heard of disability insurance? People are much more likely to have life insurance than disability insurance, which pays you in the event that you can’t work. We’re three times more likely to get injured on the job than to die during our key working years. It’s offered from employers, but it’s sometimes not such a good idea to get insurance from your employer. Because of an obscure federal law called ERISA, states can’t help you if you get insurance from an employer. If you get cheated on disability coverage from an employer, for example, the government can’t help you. Therefore, insurers know they can collect premiums and not pay on claims. So, you should buy your own disability policy. That way, you’re protected without question. Usually 70 to 75 percent of your income is recommended. And don't get a policy that uses the Social Security Administration's definition of an illness. It's very strict. Keep in mind that disability insurance is not cheap, however. So, you may have to trim how much you get. But if you’re getting it from a large employer now, you might get burned when the chips are down.

    In the next 2 hours:

22 people will die. Do you carry life insurance?

140 homes will catch fire. Do you carry home owners insurance?

408 cars will have accidents. Do you carry auto insurance?

4440 peeple will suffer disabling injuries. Do you carry disability income insurance?

If you answered no to any of these, you are doing yourself and your family a disservice.
  • disability insurance
I am 53 yrs old and had I not purchased Hartford disability (short and long term) insurance I would have been bankrupt or in a lot of financial trouble since it has taken me 3 years to get the social security money.
  • Accidental death & dismemberment
Can anyone comment on this type of insurance. We drive a lot and own a motorcycle, so we purchased this. It only costs $9.95/month through Stonebridge, a Warren Buffet company.
  • Disability Insurance
There is a extremely expense associated with disability. Disability (total or partial) is associated with an increase increase in the cost of living. Since many people are more aware of somebody whom was in a vehicle accident then somebody whom had passed, this highlights the likelihood of a person being disable prior to dying. Disability insurance is expensive, but imagine being disable to work in your current career. Who can afford the increase expense of being disable and the decrease in income. Disability insurance is of greater need than life insurance.
  • disability ins and croak and choke
I am a stage 4 non hodgkins and stem cell transplant survivor. I am 44 yo. My wife is 47 and is stage 3B breast cancer survivor. I know. The luck!! Dang. But, I work for Disney in Orlando and their health insurance is Cigna and they have treated us well and fair. What about disability ins through Disney. Should I purchase it myself due to ERISA? I have been looking into "croak and choke" mortgage protection insurance. It does not really make sense to me. But, I want to be covered in the event we need it. Not sure if its worth it. Your comments are so, so welcome. By the way. We are very happy people in spite of it all. Jana, my wife was inspired to write a book about it. www.caregiversurvivalguide.com
