Nov 19, 2004 -- Tell us how Clark stinks!
At Clarkhoward.com, there is a message board known as Clark Stinks, where people can gripe about something Clark has said or done. He thinks it important that he never has the last word. Thats why some people come on the air who disagree. Clark just asks that you respect each other on the message boards. You can pick on Clark all you want, but only him. Speaking of the Internet, last month more people were hooked up to high speed Internet connections than were connected to dial-up connections. Obviously, the benefits outweigh the negatives because people are willing to pay the outrageous prices phone and cable companies charge.
Unfortunately, Clark won't be able to answer any questions submitted via commenting. If you have a question, please try posting it to our message boards.
Recently you suggested to a teacher who was consolodating their student loans. You told them if they should sign up for some student loan forgivness plan and strech out the payments as long as they could because after ten years the rest of the loan would be forgiven. Clark these kind of programs are just the thing that has got this country in the problems it is in now. We are teaching people to avoid paying their debts. This is not right. If you cannot afford something don't by it. I don't care if it is for education. YOu still made a contract to pay a loan back. PAY IT BACK.
Asking everybody "How are you?"
If everybody told you the truth, you would have no time to solve their financial problems. Also many who call are not well or fine and are embarrassed or depressed to say they are doing fine. Please consider "Good Afternoon, how can I help you today?"
?
Credit Cards are obsolete in todays world. A bank debit card does anything I need a credit card for.... indeed the current financial crisis was caused by too much access to easy credit for irresponcible individuals. If you don't have the money to buy a product that's telling you something. Money should = value NOT DEBT!!!!
529 Savings Plans
I agree with a Clark Stinks comment the other day, for you to tell us to stay up to date and research our investing before doing, you really need to update your 529 recommendations, it's almost 2010 and you last update was 2008!
credit check on employment applicants
I disagree with your recent criticism of employers that do credit checks on their applicants. As a former employer of professional people, I can tell you from experience there is nothing more aggravating than trying to manage an employee who is continually distracted by a bad credit situation of their own creation. A person with good credit has demonstrated they are able to manage their own affairs and might be a good candidate for employment. Granted, there are gross errors in credit records but a good candidate would have detected and corrected it before it became a problem. Considering how many deadbeats there are out there looking for employment, I think employers are entitled to do anything they legally can to screen the employment pool.
Buying cameras and other photography equpmen
A couple of months ago you advised a caller not to buy a camera online. There are many dealers who sell online who have exceptionally good reputations such as B&H and Adorama. You can buy with confidence, and easily save as much as 50% from the price of local dealers. These online dealers are patronized by professional photographers, and recommended by independent photographic schools. They also have a far greater range of equipment in stock than any local dealer. Returns are accepted without question.
Bottled water
Clark
I have been enjoying your show and am amazed at you and your staff. You are truly a gift to America. Our entire economic system is based on the concept that people will be educated and buy responsibly, make sound financial decisions based on their situation, and be a wise purchaser. This is the only way our system will continue to work and yet we dont even touch on it in public schools. You are a treasure and best of all FREE.
I do want to bring to your attention something I have found regarding bottled water which you speak very lowly of and rightly so. Bottled water as you point out is often a RIP, questionable quality, contained in throw away plastic containers which is bad for the ecology, and extremely expensive. A close friend of mine invested in a company that is based in the USA creating jobs here. They make pure drinking water very similar to what NASA does on the ISS. They first collect water by dehumidifying the air, and then purify the water with filters and a patented ozonator purification system. This system is designed for home or office and you size the system according to the number of people to use it. Including the electricity you can make your own pure drinking water at slightly less than 10 Cents a GALLON. Another benefit is that it dehumidifies and possibly lowers youre A/C costs. .
The name of his company is available if you want it. Best Regards Captain Stern
HomeDepot/Lowes
I am a landlord and over the years I have found that HD goes the extra mile faster and more often than Lowes. Of course with this economy, everybody is, but HD has done it for several years.
Credit Unions
In Oregon, credit unions are merging and merging and expanding their field of membership to where there is no "family" feeling anymore. I deal with 2 C.U. & 2 Mega Banks, The mega branch employees meet and greet me by name, the CU employees could care less even though I was once president and served 12 years on the board. I predict that congress will take notice and the tax advantages will disappear, then we'll all suffer.
just one word
Clark, I think you are terrific. You have such a nice manner with all people and give very good advice and have good suggestions. I do object to one thing and that is your "in the toilet" phrase. Is it possible for you to change that to "in the tank?" Or perhaps come up with something else. People are pretty swift and would get your drift.
I'm not your old English teacher but notice that you haven't given up saying "gonna" instead of "going to."
credit consolidation
when asked on your site if you reccomend credit consolidation you say no. then there are advertisements for credit consolidation on your site. very confusing.
403b 1035 exchanges
Clark has several articles regarding what a bad deal 403b plans are for teachers. He suggests using a 1035 exchange to move the funds to a better account. I wasted about 5 hours time setting up a TIAA-CREF account and dealing with my employer only to find out that the funds cannot be moved.
