Jul 12, 2004 -- Head of Utah's 529 plan arrested on embezzlement charges
Saving for a childs education is one of the highest priorities parents have. Sometimes they make it a higher priority than saving for their own retirement, which isnt smart. But parents can get tied up in the wrong college savings plans, also known as 529 plans. These plans have become so popular that many rogue players have gotten involved and corruption has crept in. Some plans have massive fees and commissions, and right now there are no laws regarding disclosure of that information. Clark has put together a 529 Honor Roll on his site to help you chart the waters. He gives Utah the highest honors because the states plan has the lowest commission and the best payoff. But today it was announced that the head of that plan was dismissed for allegedly embezzling money. The good news is that the money he supposedly embezzeled came from Utah state funds, not from people who had money in Utahs plan. So, none of your childs money has been stolen. All of that money is managed by Vanguard, and it has been untouched. This is another reason why states should not be involved in the administration of these plans, in Clarks opinion. But, if you have money in Utahs account keep it there. Its still the best plan.
