Jan 01, 2004 -- Huge breakthrough in asthma treatment
One of the fastest growing diseases in the United States is asthma, and a lot of it is caused by the increase in the air pollution in both urban and suburban areas of the country. Many people who have asthma today live completely normal lives. But not so long ago, the activities of people with asthma were restricted depending on how serious the asthma was. In the past 15 years, people have been able to take maintenance meds that allow them to live a normal life. Still, many people forget to take these medications or they dont refill them when they are supposed to. Its basically bad patient compliance. Now, there is a new drug on the market to help with this. Its called Xolair and Jonis husband, Hal, was on with Clark to talk about it. Dr. Hal, who has a specialty in pulmonology, said Xolair gets to the heart of asthma and can even prevent it without having to take other medications. Its given once or twice a month as a shot and it could be available as early as the next few months.
