I called Verizon to complain about spam text messages. Because I have no text plan, each one was costing me 20 cents. They had no way for me to turn off text messages or limit them only to messages sent by someone already in my address book, but they did have one suggestion that did really help. Verizon has a site that can be used specifically for sending text messages from the internet to cell phone users. If you log in using your existing online account name/password (or create one if you've never created an online user name/password with them) and then change your preferences to not accept any text messages sent from the internet, that will block anyone that's spamming with the equivalent of email text messaging.

So far it's kept me from receiving any new unwanted text messages--I hope this continues to be the case! This tip should be better publicized by Verizon, though they're making money off of those who don't know about it yet, so I'm not holding out a lot of hope there.
