I think there's some exaggeration going on with regard to fuel economy and "slowing down". Gradual acceleration and consistent speed will save more gas than peeling out and going 60 on the highway will. Proof? I drive "fast" on the highway compared to some people (slow compared to those going 80+), but my 14 year old 6 cylinder just got 30 mpg for the tank (mostly highway driving). I'm not buying that it would have given me 34 mpg if I drove 50.
