Back in 1973 we had a serious gasoline shortage, and we experienced long waiting lines at the pump to fill up. You would have thought our stupid politicians would've began mandating a higher MPG requirement on all cars sold in the US (beginning that year). There is absolutely no reason why we it should be legal to sell these gas guzzling vehicles of today. All cars should be required to get at least 35 MPG. But our elected heros are to busy pandering to big oil and auto, and we're paying the price for it.
