I have been researching both Compressed natural gas (CNG) and Propane (LPG) as possible alternatives to gasoline. I am confused as to whether either of these is more cost effective that gasoline. Different variable have to be taken into account, such as the fuel efficiency of each source. One gallon of LPG/CNG does not necessarily give the same energy output as one gallon of gasoline. Also, if I recall correctly, a "gallon" of either alternative is either in a gaseous form or cooled liquid form; making volume comparisons difficult.
