Beware of prepaid phone card gotchas

I just want to warn anyone as gullible/uninformed as I that, if you purchase a prepaid phone card, it's no bargain if you pay for more minutes than you use before the card expires. I never even noticed a limit on my Kroger phone card -- until an attempted call elicited an expiration notice instead of a connection.
My complaint and attempt to "recharge" went to customer no-service; Kroger said a "recharge" would not allow me to wrap around my saved-up minutes anyway so, basically, tough luck.

My power goes out often & cell phones aren't reliable in my home, so I need old-fashioned phone service and occasional long distance, but will be more careful in the future.

What others are saying

  • kroger phone cards
i will never purchase minutes on their calling cards. their customer service is lously, especially supervisor Neil. pd 20.00 and never received minutes or refund to my acct. will burn the card and buy from another company and tell lots of family and friends how bad kroger phone cards are.
  • Straight Talk Prepaid Phone Service
BEWARE! After 8 days of dealing with customer disservice, Straight Talk was unable to port my cell phone number and activate my phone. In the process, I lost my cell phone number (once they port it, they can't re-port it) and 8 days of phone service. Each person I spoke with gave me misinformation that was different with each person I spoke to. BEWARE!
  • Tracfone prepaid
Don't expect tracfone to automatically transfer your double minutes from your old phone to your new phone. Their fine print says that the minutes aren't tranferable. They will, IF YOU ASK, transfer your double minutes ONLY IF your phone is DEFECTIVE, "as a COURTESY"! I found out the hard way when I purchased a 90 minute card for my replaced DEFECTIVE phone. My minutes didn't double and was informed by their non-English speaking customer service rep that they couldn't do anything for me!!!! These idiots couldn't even transfer my old phone number to my replacement phone! Now I have to learn a new phone number. By the way, I'm told by Customer NO- Service Rep., Orwin that Supervisers and Managers don't work on Sundays and that it's illegal to give out their last name in HIS country. Nevermind that he can and did ask me for MY full name!!
