Super Target VS. Super Wal-Mart

Last month a new Super Target opened up near my house. I love shopping there, but wondered if I get a better deal there than at Super Wal-Mart. The only way to find out was to price compare, so that's exactly what I did last Sunday (Nov. 16th).

If you know the regular prices of your ten most common purchases at local stores, then you'll really know when to stock up when something goes on sale.

Wal-Mart is not as convenient as Target, but if I'm driving by the Wal-Mart, why not stop to take advantage of the savings? On my ten items, Wal-Mart was $2.13 or 4.3 percent cheaper. Not worth driving far out of my way, but If I'm in the neighborhood, I'm happy to save $2.13.

What I learned more than anything is that shopping around is a lot smarter than just stopping at the supermarket. At Super Target instead of the regular supermarket, I save $7.41 cents on my 10 items. At Super Wal-Mart, I save $9.54

(And I forgot to mention, if I clipped coupons, which I do, I would have saved another $6.00! So clip coupons!)

You may not like the same things I do, but if it helps even a little, I thought I'd post my findings.

What others are saying

  • We're talking about prices, not how they treat employees. They choose to work there. I choose to pay less at Wal Mart.
  • Super Target vs WalMart
I find this interesting. Let me explain and let you make up your own mind. My wife worked for WalMart just up the road from a newly opened Target and decided to seek employment with Target. What a difference. At Target, she is treated like a human instead of an object to be used an abused. Yes, Martha, Walmart treats employees like dirt or less.

At Target, she is treated very well. The store, while new, is clearly a significant step above WalMart. In addition, I see the store manager in Target helping at checkout, stock shelves, as well as other tasks. Not only would this never be done at WalMart, the standard technique for the WalMart supervision is to threaten an employee with termination for not doing such things and would never dream of doing it themselves.

My vote is strongly in favor of the Super Target. Nice place to shop and the employees are much more pleasant.
  • Coupons
Just saw this and I completely agree. Do you know how to cost compare including the coupons? I have been using some of the online coupons sites, and I really like them (EarnedPenny -www.earnedpenny.com - is good for a number of different items, and TechBargains - www.techbargains.com - is great for laptops). So, I end up comparing a bunch of items with/without coupons before making a purchase (and right now I just do it the old fashioned way - with pen and pencil). Are there price comparison sites that include coupons?

I enjoyed your post. I'm like you in that I don't go out of my way to save on groceries but when I find a good deal I stock up. BTW, I saw that Clark will have a new show in CNN in today's AJC. Congratulations! Look forward to watching.
