Patti's Page: Behind the Scenes with Clark Howard

I am in shock. The new movie, Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, opens next month in select cities and the cost of the movie is a shocking $20!

I couldn't believe it when I saw the price. Now, it comes with a "free" T-shirt, but you don't have a choice to get the ticket without the shirt, so how "free" is that?

A woman called the TV station from Covington today. She tried to help her financially-strapped brother but instead she's out $750 bucks.
Here's what happened. Her brother found a company on the web that would give him a $5,000 loan. But they needed collateral. (Red flag #1)

This is a company that is supposed to be a credit repair service. (Red flag #2)

The company website says it is in Irving, California. But it asks the woman to send a $750 money order as collateral for the loan to CANADA . (Red flag #3)

Clark and I just finished a TV story that answers the question, "How far should you drive to save on gas?"

Now, before I go any further, I should admit, one of the reasons I gravitated toward a journalism degree was the fact I only had to take 1 math class.

A few weeks ago, I mentioned a really good special on CNN called "Busted: Mortgage Meltdown". I just found out it's airing again this weekend. It airs this Saturday and Sunday at 8pm and 11pm Eastern Time.  I highly recommend it.

Also, if you are interested, tonight at 5pm, Clark Howard makes a special appearance in another reporter's story on how men and women negotiate differently. If you aren't in the Atlanta area to see WSB-TV, you'll be able to catch it on our website: WSBTV.COM.

Wonder why you see so many commercials on TV about upcoming stories in newscasts?

Noticed that Grey's Anatomy is finally "all new" tonight?

It's not a coincidence. It's ratings, or as we know it in the business, "the book." (That's because in the old days, ratings would come to TV stations in the form of a book. At least that's what I'm told.)

Television news is, sadly, ripe for parody. Jon Stewart makes a living making fun of us. Thank goodness he finds government officials even more fun to make fun of, or TV news people would get more face-time on The Daily Show.

It's easy to laugh at The Daily Show. He makes fun of NETWORK news people. We here in LOCAL news could never be that lame.

Could we?

I love listening to Clark on the radio. Every day I learn something new. I love reading articles on how to cut my expenses. I buy books about saving money, and practically memorized the tightwad gazette books from the 1990s. Now I get a "behind the scenes" view of Clark's radio show and his TV stories. But listening, reading and watching consumer experts isn't enough if you really want to get your finances straight. You need to take action.

The people in charge of the news budget at WSB-TV have cut us off. No texting patches to stick on our arms to help wean us off our addiction.  No support groups. Just cold turkey.

Okay, since I work for an ABC affiliate, I probably shouldn't be touting another network. But as Clark says, our only boss is the viewer (or in radio's case-listener) so in that spirit, I have to share this: CNN had the greatest hour-long special over the weekend on the mortgage meltdown. (Yes, my life is so exciting, I spend my Friday night watching news!)

Next Monday, Clark has a story on WSB-TV about gas prices. Specifically, it's about whether to trade in your gas guzzler for a more fuel efficient car.

This week's poll
The high cost of jet fuel has a lot of people staying at home this summer instead of traveling. Is there a "staycation" in your immediate future?
Yes, I just can't afford a plane ticket and/or hotel room right now.
No, I've saved up all year just to get away for a bit.
Maybe, I have to wait and see how my finances pan out.
