Financial Indulgences

What's your biggest financial indulgence?

For me, for as long as I've been making money to call my own, I've been spending it on travel.

It's really my one consistent financial indulgence.   When I was younger, much of the "lifestyle" debt I acquired came from taking trips that I didn't have the cash for, but somehow found a credit card to put on.   I eventually got out of that debt, and yes, it was hard - but even today, I still find myself spending all of my "play" money on travel.  (These days I live on a budget, and my "play" money is money after bills and savings)

Recently, a friend asked me why I haven't bought myself a new cool mp3/media player phone type thing.   She has one, and she's caught me drooling over hers a little too often.

Me:  I don't know, it's just really hard for me to part with a couple hundred bucks for something like that.

Friend:  But you just went on that beach trip AND didn't you buy another plane ticket today?

Me:  sheepishly.... Well, yes.

Friend: Well, have you ever stopped to think about all of the things that you could have had if you didn't take so many trips.

Me:  even more sheepishly.....Well, no.

And the truth is, I never really had.  It's always just seemed easy to me go without the new TV, or the pretty necklace, or the new car- but the idea of turning down a chance to travel somewhere new - well, that's kinda heartbreaking to me.

However my friend's point that my $300 trip was a choice not to buy a $300 phone, did put some perspective on things.  I'm sure I'll think about that phone next time a chance for a new adventure falls my way- just as sure as I am that I'll still choose to take the trip. :-)

What others are saying

  • Travel
We travel more than anything else. We try and find deals in Bed & Breakfasts instead of hotels in the higher priced towns. We are staying at a B&B in NY and San Fran this year.
  • travel
I have always felt travel was a great release from everyday stress. It makes me feel good and easier to work when I have a future trip in the planning stages. Things break or go out of style, memories are forever!
  • Travel indulgence
For the past 25 years, my disposable income has also gone to travel more than any other item. We rented all those years out of inertia (happy where we were living and our rent was way below market rate). We could have saved for a house and bought years ago but, in reality, we are ahead. We had several wonderful trips to Europe from 1999-2006. Now the dollar is too weak to think of going to Europe. We bought a house in December, it's gorgeous, like living in a luxury resort. So, instead of travel, I plan to enjoy my house for a couple of years. Hopefully the dollar will recover and we'll be able to travel again. But I don't regret doing it while the dollar was strong.
  • GMAC Insurance
Yesterday, Clark stated that GMAC Insurance had a safe driver test on their Web Site. I could not find it. Can you direct me to it?
  • Hey Charles,

Your rights to change an itinerary and the fees you may or may not incur because of the change are sadly up to each airline. It worries me that you can't find the info in the fare rules - that's where it should be. Sorry I can't be more helpful...my only suggestion is to start looking over that fine print with a magnifying glass.
  • Travel
Hi Kimberly, by chance do you know the latest rule/reg as it relates to your options when the airlines changes your itenary. I don't seem to be able to find it anywhere in the T&C's for the tickets I purchased.
  • I'm with you
When I was single and had plenty of discretionary income I had an actual item in my budget for travel. I guess I prefer to have the experiences over the stuff if I have to make a choice.
